Udyama is a food security and sustainable rural livelihoods focused action & advocacy oriented organization primarily working in the state of Odisha. UDYAMA aims at strengthening food security & livelihoods through restoration and sustainable management of natural resources, capacity building of local communities to deal with & combating environmental hazards & through increased access to education & health services. Land, water & forests play a critical role supporting the livelihood system.
The objective is to work directly with communities and engaging partner NGOs in flood & drought prone areas and to carve out good learning on community resilience processes .Learning–Linking- Livelihoods is the core areas of UDYAMA that has been scaled up and replicated in coastal, rural and tribal hinter lands. Founded in 1997, UDYAMA primarily aims towards strengthening and building capacities of local communities towards rejuvenating human, ecological ,economic capital & well-being improvement with a view to enhancing adaptation to vulnerability and changing the culture of dependency to a culture of self-reliance in harnessing the resource base, blending of traditional and improved technology transformation, with well articulated development communication that links to the broader view of poverty and poverty alleviation that goes beyond just income poverty to include empowerment, capability and health etc. • Highlights the crucial role of ‘ local context’ (especially vulnerability context) – and how this influences the asset base, the selection of livelihood strategies, and the outcomes for households.•Gives space to local perspectives - categorize the strategies that make up their livelihoods. • Build on what exists - a multidimensional, integrated perspective that unites the concepts of economic development, reduced vulnerability and environmental sustainability. Udyama is an enabling and Development Organization facilitating small efforts of the communities with a big dream towards a resilient society that is capable of mitigating the current development gaps while sowing the seeds, nurturing to grow and meeting the next development challenges.Thus, Udyama’s Vision lies in the its value that small, specific scale, SMART and sustainable (SSSSS) efforts can bring about the desired change in building a Resilient Society.Udyama has been undertaking and facilitating modest attempts in a sustained manner, primarily to restore the networks that can rejuvenate the resource base. Additionally, it empowers the communities in searching alternative means to live with dignity and face the ‘Next Development Challenges’ for a lasting solution to disaster resilient development and adaptation to climate change vulnerabilities through a process of participation, learning and positive action. • Landscape based ecological advancement towards responsive development in harmony with water-nature-culture-life style • Life cycle Based Community Livelihoods Resilience & food security in Coastal, Rural and Tribal Hilly Regions • Ecosystem based DRR & Model building on Micro-Water conservation, Sustainable Agriculture, Crop Diversification, • Inclusion of Women & children towards safe Sanitation, House Hold Nutrition and Hygiene, Environmental Education • Employable Life Skill Development & digital literacy and Knowledge Transfer income diversification of ultra poor & disability, entrepreneurships, • Advocacy towards Green Energy & low carbon development strategies • Technology Transfer on Solar Home Lights, Fuel efficiency Cook stoves, Biogas, Biomass • Gearing Greening towards environmental sustainability, local Biodiversity conservation & commons • Implementing & advocacy on Minimizing Adverse impact of Distress Migration at source and destination, • Citizen Action on climate Justice involving Women , Children and multi stakeholders • Networking and mainstreaming DRR and Institution building & Risk Transfer on DRR & CCA •Result Based Management Training , Study, Research & capacity building of collectives & groups, federations& Grooming Rise in women in Agriculture as a shifting trend in rural agricultural based livelihood, Net increase in the incomes of women from farm and non-farm based interventions , benefit maximisation through adoption of innovative farming and non farming practices, Increased soil health and fertility to sustain agriculture based livelihoods, Improved food and nutritional security of women and their families & enhanced income , Increase in area under cultivation, cropping intensity and food production by women ,Strengthening of community Institutions for better management and control of resources , Development of resource pool of facilitators ,, Drudgery reduction for women in agriculture through use tools / technologies , Community adaptation measures evolved to reduce vulnerability ,Enabling environment for income enhancement entrepreneurial/employable skills , establishing effective network among stakeholders and initiate citizen action , process for availing carbon credit from community biodiversity, local forest ,Added value: creation of jobs, improved nutrition, gender equality, This platform shall help to raise the relative profile and positioning of consortium and to disseminate learning to decision makers to guide regional, national policies and public investment schemes in natural resource management sector.In addition, Udyama has embraced integrated and convergent action, meticulously imbedded into the community-led programmes, for mitigating related issues like education, sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and health that have a significant influence on the lives of the poor in both rural and urban settings. UDYAMA needs a Broad Based Partnership towards Demonstrating Community-based Rural Livelihoods Linking Water-Energy-Ecology-Empowerment project with an objectives: To Reduce drudgery, health hazards and promotion sustainable livelihoods engaging community, To Empower community youths and women towards self resilient towards gearing greening and green energy and promote Eco-prenures for good income and self dignity.The whole crux is to Protecting land mass from degradation, utilizing ecologically sensitive indigenous and alternative methods for land & water utilization, rejuvenation followed by adoption green energy, biomass conservation can help to achieve important prerequisites for environmental sustainability & livelihoods empowerment on enterprising mode . Udyama follows four strategic directions towards fulfillment of the stated Vision and Mission:  Stakeholder Partnerships (Affiliations & Alliances) on specific themes;  Promotion of alternative and local-specific development processes through Local Empowerment;  Facilitating an enabling environment for risk reduction and livelihood promotion; and  Program diversity with value based assurance and insurance.
