Supporting schools with Sustainability learning and action: part 2

  • Published on May 25, 2020
To mentor and support at least 20 schools on their quest to become more sustainable through the GSS/Water Explorer intiatives. Mentoring will involve supporting schools with sustainability education topics and implementing appropriate actions projects.
Working on a particular topic/theme as a series of lessons is beneficial as there is always a recap, it enables a more thorough coverage of a topic and deeper more meaningful learning to take place. The example for this reporting period has been the setting up permaculture gardens in many of the schools. Learning about growing food and ecosystems at the same time and unlearning common practices that are of detriment to the environment eg monoculture, pesticides etc , which in itself is complex and also requires time. It has been found with each subsequent visit, learners have retained info and are able to make the links with the previous part. Working on the same module in all schools at the same time is also helpful as, we get to see what works and doesn't and improve on it constantly. These first 3mths we covered the following topics : Wetlands Water audits Climate Change and Spekboom Climate Change and making a solar oven Permaculture, design and planting Rainwater Harvesting Thirsty paper and making paper Secret water From July (once schools re-opened up until Dec) we focused on Climate change and spekboom Climate change making solar ovens Power Pulses Permaculture Alien invasive plants spp Indigenous water wise gardens - encouraging biodiversity Water audits
