Support and Development of new GEN members through Ecolabelling programs

  • Published on January 15, 2021
Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) works in partnership with One Planet Network and 10 YFP (Working Group 2) to support the collaboration among type I ecolabel programmes and facilitate their mutual recognition, as well as to aim to create new type 1 ecolabel programmes in new countries. GEN's primary activities are not only to support best practice with existing members but to grow more ecolabelling programs in order to create greater global access to ecolabelled products across the globe.
Type I ecolabels align with the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)14024:2018 and are awarded to environmentally preferable products and services based on life cycle considerations. The Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) is an international platform for coordination between type I ecolabels (as per the ISO 14024 definition) and works closely with United Nations Environment. Ecolabels are a critical procurement tool for many governments and industry / private sector. In turn more labels grow more responsible consumption solutions for manufacturers consumers all across the world. In order to achieve this, we need to grow more ecolabelling bodies across the world. Growing more members is a key objective of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) in partnership with UN Environment. The two main objectives of this working group are to: 1. Support the collaboration among type I ecolabel programmes and facilitate their mutual recognition, as well as to 2. Provide education, capacity building and consultation to developing countries and emerging economics to develop type I ecolabel programmes. The aim is to create new type 1 ecolabel schemes by the end of 2020 and further into the future. The partnership between UN Environment and GEN has been a very successful one with great reach across the globe and supporting many nations in moving towards responsible consumption through ecolabelling. The result as of end of 2020 include the following new GEN Associate members: Agrement South Africa Eco- Choice Africa Green Product Council, Indonesia National Cleaner Production Centre, Sri Lanka Stichting Milieukeur Nederlands Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Turkey GEN also welcomes a new affiliate member (non ecolabel) Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve This is an ongoing project and we welcome new ecolabels and new nations to be involved. We invite you to reach out to find more information from GEN and UN Environment One Planet.
