Strengthening SCP Practices in Sri Lanka by Empowering SMEs in Agri-food Sector through Eco-Innovation

This project was implemented under the funds of UNEP (January 2015-December 2016). The project aims to develop local resources and capacities for eco-innovation in developing and transition economies. It specifically targets small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). To reach the SMEs, the UNEP eco-innovation project co-operates with service providers working in Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP), other business intermediaries, and national governments.
Aim of this concept is to embed sustainability at strategy level and change the business models. Methodology examines the whole value chain of a company to identify key areas and enhance their economic, environmental and social performance. As a result six (6) SMEs were selected and applied the concept developing business case for eco-innovation, enhancing policy context including methods for identifying, adapting and developing technology, developing technical expertise and capacity for adoption of eco-innovation and fostering regional and international collaboration. The overall aim was to enhance the business sector contribution to the achievement of resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production patterns. • Select suitable beneficiaries from agri-food sector for the project • Conduct periodical steering committee meetings with expert panel • Undertake assessments of selected industries according to the eco innovation methodology by UN Environment • Develop sustainable business models as the final outcome and support for implementation • Conduct local dissemination events targeting industries and government sector The two year program has been successfully completed. The sectors who got the services, highly appreciated the NCPC's Contribution towards the project activities. The eco innovation methodology was successfully implemented the selected industries in agri food sector. Some companies were highly confident in some implementation activities as they have realize the value to the company by conducting such activities. Most of the project activities required support from NCPC also in identifying the real benefit and to carry out most of the activities. NCPC contributed in providing our technical expertise as well apart from developing new business strategies for companies. In future, there is a possibility to sell this as commercial service but it may take some time to reach the customers and establish the concept. Now this project is completed.
