“Solar Energy for Low-Carbon Sustainable Lifestyles in Solak, Aygavan and Malishka Rural Communities of Armenia”

  • Published on October 18, 2017
The initiative is designed to contribute to the SLE Programme of the 10YFP objective 3 (Develop tools and incentives, provide capacity-building for achieving sustainable lifestyles and disseminating good practices) by promoting the practical use of renewable energy and energy efficiency in rural Armenia for climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability.
This initiative is funded through the 10YFP Trust Fund established by UNEP.
The specific objectives are:
- Strengthen the target communities providing them with modern mechanisms for solar energy use, opportunities to enhance local initiatives for improving quality of life and the environment;
- Reduce energy costs (up to 50%) of the involved communities via implementation of renewable solar energy pilots

Specifically, by the end of the project (September 2018):
1. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% in
• Aygevan (school solar water heating and cooking)
• Solak (solar water heating for Women’s Center)
• Malishka (solar street lighting)
2. Develop recommendations on solar energy use for sustainable rural development for national decision-makers, according to the specific values and needs of the target communities
3. Reach at least 70% of the village population in 3 target communities with awareness raising activities on solar energy use for sustainable rural development
4. Train active community members in each of the 3 target villages on fruit drying, water heating, cooking and street lighting (total at least 90 participants)
The initiative is helping each of the three villages solve specific challenges using solar energy, experience is being shared through the Solak Women’s Center. In Malishka, accumulating lamps are being installed for solar energy to light the streets. In Solak, training is organized in the village Women’s Center promoting the use of solar energy for water heating and fruit drying. In Aygevan, solar fruit drying is being organized as source of income year round. The initiative is helping the women farmers contribute to the sustainable development of their community through promotion of clean and safe solar drying and strengthening their income-generating skills. In Aygevan, the project is also introducing solar cooking to organize feeding of children aged 6-9 (elementary level) attending the village school, the school will heat water for hygienic and household purposes. Expected Outcomes
1. Greenhouse gas emissions reduced by at least 50% in three target communities (Malishka community: the intra-streets lit in the village. Solak community: training on solar water heating organized for school staff; demonstration pilot with participation of active mothers organized. Aygevan community: solar fruit drying organized; water heating and cooking with use of solar energy is organized for the village schoolchildren.)
2. Recommendations on solar energy use for sustainable rural development developed for national decision-makers, as a contribution to national and international environmental policy programmes, strategies and plans.
3. At least 70% of the village population in 3 target communities increased awareness on solar energy use for sustainable rural development.
The results of successful completion of the energy efficient street-lighting, water heating and fruit drying can be used by other communities and organizations promoting renewable energy use in Armenia.
