Search for Sustainable Schools: Uganda

Building on previous work related to sustainability in schools, the project aims to
undertake a national search for sustainable schools and award funds to the winning
schools to implement their sustainability plans.
In parallel, internal capacity for mainstreaming and supporting sustainable schools will
be further strengthened through the development of environmental education
materials.
In addition, an awareness raising campaign will be organized to encourage participation
in the project and in sustainable lifestyles more broadly.
  • Following a nationwide advertising campaign, 10 schools were selected for support and funding under this project to improve their sustainability.
  • National capacity building workshops and road shows were organised for the head teachers, teachers and members of governing boards of selected schools.
  • Under the supervision of the project technical committee, the schools developed their activity plans
  • The activities undertaken under the project included the construction of numerous water tanks for rainwater harvesting, installation of solar panels, tree planting, construction of a biodigester, installation of energy-saving stoves establishment of a poultry house and introduction of waste bins for recycling,
  • Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the international exchange workshops with the other participating countries were held virtually in October 2021.
  • Despite the delays, caused by the local lockdowns and school closure all activity plans of the projects have been completed by the end of 2021.
