Project Green Call 2018

The main objectives of Project Green Call are: To create awareness at the grass root level on the need to preserve the environment by specifically engaging EEG student members; To educate people on the need for suitable waste management practices - specifically to 'Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle'; To create more action platforms to engage different members of the society; To contribute to energy and water conservation; To reduce the volume of waste going to landfills and promote the regular practice of recycling to achieve this goal As mentioned previously, EEG has an active mobile collection programme since 2009 wherein individuals and companies from all over the UAE collect and deposit all brands of used mobile phones for recycling. These mobile phones are sent to recycling facilities where they are crushed and the valuable materials such as gold, copper etc. are extracted and introduced back into the production line. This active and positive behaviour – promoting ‘Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ – makes individuals more open to sustainable production and consumption patterns. Thus, initiatives such as Project Green Call can lead to profoundly lower generation of electronic waste in the long run. In 2018, EEG witnessed an active participation of 63 registered schools, corporate entities and student members who were successful in collecting 966 pieces of mobile phones, saving 179,459 gallons of gasoline and diverting hazardous electronic waste from landfills. Since its inception, EEG has been synonymous with efficient waste management through its year-around campaigns and drives. Specifically, with mobile phones, EEG has been successful in collecting and depositing 57,486 mobile phones for recycling since 2009. EEG also organises several dialogue sessions with schools and private organisations to raise awareness on mobile phone recycling. In 2018, Project Green Call had the following impacts: The mitigation of 8.6 MT of carbon dioxide Saving of 179,459 gallons of gasoline In 2018, we saw good growth that has resulted in the collection and recycling of 966 mobile phones. However, with the right partnership with like-minded organisations and individuals, we would like to create more traction and reach out to more participants to bring them on board. It is imperative that the youth, academia, government and corporate institutions realise and recognise the importance of proper waste management of their consumer goods. And we believe, with the right partnership, we will be successful in doing so.
