For Our Emirates We Plant 2020
The “For Our Emirates We Plant” programme is a unique platform that intertwines EEG’s recycling campaigns with tree planting.
In 2020, a total of 2,120 indigenous Sidra, Ghaf, Neem and Miswak trees were planted at four sites. Apart from this, participants who met their targets as part of EEG’s recycling and waste management programme were also eligible to plant trees under their name. EEG has planted and oversaw the planting of 2,100,789 trees across UAE under various campaign banners.
• To follow the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and one of the strongest environmentalists in the world.
• To encourage all sectors of the society to take steps to combat desertification, climate change and global warming
• To instil environmental ethics in the publics’ mind and create a powerful association between tree planting and positive actions for sustainable development
• To enable students to understand the benefits of trees and transform that understanding into a sense of responsibility
• To divert waste from landfills
• To implement habitual, long term recycling
• To promote volunteerism, civic responsibility in the society and Corporate Social Responsibility amongst organisations
• To promote urban afforestation and contribute effectively to increase the sustainable green spaces in the UAE
• To contribute to the efforts of the government in providing the right habitat for the wildlife to thrive
In 2007, EEG launched its million tree planting campaign and has been building on it ever since. By end of 2020, EEG had succeeded in planting more than 2 million indigenous trees within the UAE.
Below is a breakdown of the cumulative number of trees as part of the “For Our Emirates We Plant” programme:
• 2007: 1,608,777 trees
• 2008: 1,614,221 trees
• 2009: 1,614,537 trees
• 2010: 2,091,240 trees
• 2011: 2,091,659 trees
• 2012: 2,092,127 trees
• 2013: 2,092,492 trees
• 2014: 2,093,227 trees
• 2015: 2,093,977 trees

• 2019: 2,098,669 trees
• 2020: 2,100,789 trees
These trees sequester 12,388 Metric Tonnes of CO2e from the atmosphere annually, which is equivalent to removing 2,564 cars off the road for a year.
Project-wise breakdown of planting in 2020:
Neighbourhood Recycling Programme: 134 trees were planted, which on maturity, will sequester 0.79 MT of CO2 annually.
One Root, One Communi-tree: 794 trees were planted by various entities in 2020, these trees on maturity, will sequester 4.68 MT of CO2 annually.
Green Call: A total of 13 trees were planted, which will sequester 0.08 MT of CO2 annually.
Recycle. Reforest. Repeat: Participants who achieved their targets planted a total of 108 trees that will sequester 0.64 MT of CO2 annually.
Paper Walk Campaign: A total of 51 trees were planted. These trees on maturity will sequestrate 0.30 MT of CO2 annually.
Planting A Greener Future: A total of 100 trees were planted. These trees on maturity will sequestrate 0.59 MT of CO2 annually.
Together We Plant: In 2020, a total of 20 trees were planted that will sequester 0.12 MT CO2 annually.
Tree Adoption: A total of 900 trees were adopted and planted, which will sequester 5.31 MT CO2 annually.
In the upcoming year, we would like to:
1. Invite the corporate sector to come on board through sponsorship, partnerships and adoption of trees to further increase the sustainable green spaces in the UAE
2. Get other stakeholders to come on board to help expand the reach of this programme and increase its impact nationally and globally
3. Expand the campaign to other Arab countries to support the afforestation efforts to counter desertification and promote active sustainability actions
4. Invite more media partners for proper pre- and post-marketing of the programme
5. Work with relevant government entities in every Emirate to identify areas that are suitable for planting
