One Earth Initiative
One Earth connects the dots between who we are, what we buy, where we live, what we make, what we trade, and how we live together to create positive impact.
One Earth is a nonprofit ‘think and do' tank based in Vancouver, Canada. One Earth's mission is to transform production and consumption patterns locally, nationally and internationally to be sustainable, healthy, and just within the limits of living systems.
One Earth's passion is bringing people, ideas and activities together to accelerate the transition towards sustainability. One Earth catalyze networking and action on the issues they care about. One Earth adopts a systems approach to identify high-impact solutions, and engages the arts and citizens to create compelling visions of life in sustainable futures. One Earth is engaged in convening, policy, communication and action initiatives to transform the consumer lifestyle – and the economic, industrial production, financial, political, social and cultural systems that support it.
One Earth is a research and advocacy group focused on transforming production and consumption patterns locally, nationally and internationally to move towards long-term sustainability. To do that, One Earth reveals our global interdependence and make connections visible. It identifies important leverage points for social change and take action. It promotes positive visions of the future to make sustainable livelihoods attractive, and inspire the world to think and act as one Earth. One Earth's goal is to engage each other – our planet's stakeholders – in a continuous dialogue to foster living more equitably with Earth's ecological means. One Earth is working on three main projects:
1) sustainable consumption & production (scp)
One Earth is working towards Canadian and US leadership in this area through systemic change and collective impact, with partners including The Story of Stuff Project and The Sustainability Funders, and, on the policy front, with the Canadian and US Government, the United Nations, private sector, media, academia, and civil society.
One Earth co-hosted a North American workshop to transform how we make, use and throw away stuff (workshop website). It brought together 40 participants from across sectors from the 7-9 October 2013.
2) cities for people: new economies
One Earth advances urban resilience and sustainability, exploring how to achieve Lighter Footprints as communities as well as re-thinking "waste" to become part of a closed-loop economy. Cities for People is an initiative that explores the following question: How can we enhance social, ecological, and economic wellbeing and help civic cultures thrive? It engages multiple stakeholders – citizens, community organizations, policy makers, municipalities, universities, private companies and foundations – in taking collaborative action to create more resilient and livable cities.
3) disruptive imaginings: experience sustainable futures of everyday lives
This project is about moving beyond negative stories about the future and creating compelling attractive visions of sustainable futures, in particular sustainable lifestyles. Future scenarios help us think and plan in more innovative, rigorous and adaptive ways. We can go beyond gathering information (“what we know”) through trend analysis and other tools, expanding our understanding of options (“what is possible or imaginable”).
