Neighbourhood Recycling Project 2020
The Neighbourhood Recycling (NRP) Project was launched in 2010 to engage EEG student members during the summer break. They were tasked with organising a recycling project in their neighbourhoods to achieve the collection of recyclables with pre-determined targets within a set period.
In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, EEG opened it to all students (members and non-members). Those who achieved the targets planted a tree under their names in the “For Our Emirates We Plant” Campaign on 20.12.20.
• To guide the youth to gain confidence and spread awareness and benefits of recycling.
• To enhance the creative potential of the youth and build on their communication skills
• To bring families together and promote the sense of togetherness and neighbourhood
• To create awareness at the student community level on the need to preserve the environment
• To promote awareness among the communities and families about proper waste management practices
• To promote good ethical behaviour amongst families
• To provide exposure and awareness of the local recycling industry
• To reduce the volume of waste going to landfills and promote the regular practice of recycling to achieve this goal
• To provide opportunities for students to plant trees under their names and promote the concept of urban afforestation and combating desertification
• To understand the importance of nature to promote healthy living concept
The NRP Project, which is conducted during the summer months, has been specifically designed to engage EEG student members by encouraging them to participate in a project to fulfil their social responsibility as part of the larger community. Over the years, the Project has grown extensively as more students have been enthusiastically collecting and depositing recyclables with EEG.
In 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, EEG registered participation of 74 student members and 6 non-members who collected:
• 29,909 kg of paper
• 2,209 kg of plastic
• 195 kg of aluminium cans
• 924 pieces of mobile phones
• 58 pieces of toner
Given below is the breakdown of the participation and collection numbers for a few recyclables over the years:
• 2017: 91 students collected 45,534 kg of paper and 834 pieces of mobile phones
• 2018: 73 participants collected 38,682 kg of paper and 252 pieces of mobile phones
• 2019: 85 students collected 35,636 kg of paper and 659 pieces of mobile phones
• 2020: 80 students collected 29,909 kg of paper and 924 pieces of mobile phones
At the end of the Project, students were also successful in planting 134 trees as part of the ‘For Our Emirates We Plant’ campaign.
In the upcoming year, we would like to:
1. Collaborate with more schools in all the Emirates to encourage more students to join EEG as members and to participate
2. Partner with media houses for proper pre- and post-marketing of the campaign
3. Get the buy in from the private sector to support and sponsor the project
4. The media to interview the students who have achieved the highest collection to motivate them and inspire others to join
