Monsoon Wooding 2019

In the wake of the various “developmental” activities that a growing Delhi is seeing, its old green trees are being felled, even as 300 more cars are added to Delhi’s roads every day. Monsoon Wooding is our only hope to breathe in one of the most polluted cities of the world and therefore, we Plant, Protect and Promote Trees during and after the monsoon months in Delhi. Some of the key objectives of the project include the following : 1. Fostering awareness on issues of depleting green cover and local biodiversity, among youth and civil society members 2. Large scale mobilisation and community engagement through the facilitation of hands on plantations across Delhi/NCR 3. Plant, promote and protect native trees of Delhi/NCR 4. Creation of lush green infrastructures including fruit forests, regenerative forests, butterfly and herb gardens, in order to tackle the issue of air pollution within the city. Over the last decade, we have planted and survived over 50000 trees in total. These plantations have been carried out in collaboration with schools, colleges, RWAs, institutions and organizations. • In 2013, Delhi’s first urban mini forest was created at St Mary’s School, Dwarka • In 2014, Faridabad’s first mini forest with over 600 saplings of 40 species was created in Dhouj. Over 50 volunteers from different parts of the city worked together for 2 days to transform a barren patch of land into a self-sustainable forest. • In 2015, we created food forests, butterfly gardens and native herb gardens with over 2600 saplings across Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon. - Gurgaon got its first food forest and butterfly garden with 1500 saplings - Created a mini food forest with 100 saplings at a shelter home run by Muskan - Fostering of partnerships through MW with corporate houses such as PwC, Mckinsey, S & P Capital IQ and Boston Consulting Group. - Created a native herb patch at Department of Social work , Delhi University and small green patches at Sarvodya Kanya Vidalaya, Malviya Nagar and Mayoor School, Noida • In 2016, we collaborated with Bitgiving, a crowdfunding platform to raise funds to plant across the city. As a part of the campaign, over 2400 saplings were adopted by individuals and organizations and planted across the city in the form of forests, herb gardens and butterfly gardens. • In the year 2017, Swechha with the support of Bitgiving and over 1000 young school students and volunteers, created 5 urban native forests , 3 upcycled butterfly and herb gardens and a shade air detox garden across 5 different government run schools within Delhi. • Over 500 volunteers are engaged every year through green interventions across schools, colleges and corporate houses • In the years 2018 & 2019, we carried out our most successful campaigns till date and added over 12,000 native trees to Delhi/NCR’s green cover, engaging over 300 young school students and volunteers from different institutions in the process. • Each of our plantations have ensured a minimum survival rate of 80-90 percent.
