JustNow fights against food waste at the distribution level with food retailers [AFFILIATED]

  • Published on December 14, 2017
JustNow is a system that helps both large and small businesses save money while increasing revenue and client engagement. This is achieved by reducing fresh food waste through the use of a smart advertising mobile application.
In South Africa, food retailers lose over €1.5bn each year with expired and damaged products, which represent on average 5% of the stores’ gross revenue. In Europe, the loss accounts to over €7.15bn. As a result, a large proportion of their investments are channeled towards improving logistics and stock control. Preventing even a fraction of the 5% loss can have a huge impact in increasing their profitability. We can help them reduce this loss by making use of a smart mobile advertising solution, while also creating a new sales and marketing channel that enables them to easily engage their customers. JustNow activity participates in raising awareness about food waste among consumers and also in enhancing food retailers to integrate best practices in order to reduce food waste in the distribution side. Very few recycling policies exist and still tons of food are disposed in the landfill by food businesses, while consumers are not incentivised to modify their behavior neither they are aware of the threat societies bring upon food system and natural resources. In the meantime, we are developing a AI (Artificial Intelligence) based tool that retailers will use to better manage their purchase, therefore their inventory, minimising all the more the food waste. Our solution enables a new sales and marketing channel helping consumers get the best offers for fresh food and also help businesses increase their number of customers. We develop, support and deploy a system that aims to reduce food waste by making use of a smart advertising mobile solution. JustNow - a solution that reduces food waste by making use of a smart advertising system, with Artificial Intelligence backend features: - A mobile consumer application - for promoting and claiming offers - An integrated merchandiser application - easy offer and stock management. - The JustNow Dashboard - overview of the marketing channel and customers engagement, plus merchandiser app features. - Undergoing: we are building an A.R.S. (Automatic Replenishment System) based on AI with business intelligence features (suggestions for the merchandiser, stock management, promotions management...) We are currently in 7 Engen Woolworths stores and in Bryanston Organic Food Market in South Africa. We are going to deploy our solution at Total Mugg & Bean petrol stations in 2018 and pilot with Spar supermarkets. The JustNow MVP has been launched with 3 sites in mid-October 2016. With only organic acquisition, it registered 150 users in the first 1½ months. With our first stores, we reduced food waste by almost 30% with only 700 users. So in 4 months we saved them ZAR170K. On top of this, we have generated an additional one third in normal revenue. That means that for every R70 spent on offers the shop gained R35 in additional revenue. So our stores made an extra R84K. Currently, we have 1,500 active users. For our longest clients, we generate 1.5-4% of their monthly turnover. This year we have generated sales in value of over ZAR700K, which would have been wasted otherwise. We are looking at extending our coverage and diversity of shops. We are working with Engen Woolworths, Total Mugg & Bean, looking for piloting with Spar, but we need to involve all the retailers in South Africa: Pick'nPay, Shoprite, Food Lovers Market, Fruit & Veg City, Checkers, Woolworths, Food markets etc... So we are looking at intros at these retailers to present our solution, showcase our results and propose them to implement our solution. We are also looking at connecting NGOs and food bank with our shops, so that we can inform them everyday what has been removed from the shelve and what can be taken by these organisations for charity and distribution, instead of going to a landfill. So NGOs and food bank are welcome to contact us for partnering.
