Implementation of Indicators and Criteria of the Sustainable Tourism Zone of the Greater Caribbean (STZC)

To support and enhance the adoption of socially responsible and sustainable approaches to tourism development among the countries of the Greater Caribbean through the implementation and monitoring of STZC indicators and criteria.
The STZC and it's system of indicators have been a ground breaking proposal considering the scale and the scope of the initiative. To this date 25 Member States and Associate Members of the ACS have expressed their commitment to sustainable tourism by nominating a total of 39 destinations, the sustainability assesment and implementation of indicators is being done in phases with tecnical support from the Directorate of Sustainable Tourism. Phase I. Was delevoped in 2008, resulting in the evaluation of 08 destinations. Phase II. Is being was developed with participation of 10 Countries from 2016 - 2017. Phase III. Will be developed in 2018. Participants on the program and partners have commended the initiative, highlighting the level of depth of the information requested in order to provide a detailed diagnostic on the status of the destination before categorizing it. The DST is currently collaborating with the George Washington University, the Organisation of American States and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council in a report that among other finings, presents an overview on the accomplishments, performances and challenges that destinations face during the implementation of sustainability programs.
