Halong Bay eliminating single-use plastics

  • Published on February 3, 2020
Over 100 tons of garbage is collected from Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh Province per month, of which, up to 70% is plastic waste. This number has pushed Ha Long City People's Committee and the Bay Management Board to think about ways to solve the waste issue. Ha Long Bay Management Board will impose strict penalties on businesses that don't comply with the regulations on single-use plastics.
In the Halong Bay since september 1st 2019 there is a ban on single use plastics, including tourism sector (bags, drinking bags, etc.). Halong Bay Management Department cooperate with Quang Ninh Department of Natural Resource and Environment to collect and dispose of single-use plastic following Vietnamese plastic waste regulations. Since 01 September 2019, tourist cruises operated in Ha Long bay have to classify waste (into recyclable and non-recyclable waste) before sending to the waste collection agents. Ha Long Bay Management Board will impose strict penalties on businesses that don't comply with the regulations on single-use plastics.
