Greentourism project

  • Published on November 30, 2018
The cultural and natural heritage of European tourism are its two main assets and maintaining the competitiveness of European tourism means preserving those assets. The aim of the Greentourism.eu portal is to illustrate how and why this is done in practice and to better prepare those studying tourism for the challenges of managing a sustainable business.
The main aim of the project is to strengthen cooperation between the current and future needs of the tourism business and vocational schools, by presenting real case studies and providing the students with best environmental practices in sustainable tourism. The Greentourism.eu portal presents numerous real-life practices to be implemented in businesses which have successfully introduced such measures in their work, making them both more profitable and more socially responsible. Also, the portal allows testing your knowledge on the matter through tests or by choosing how to deal with encountered issues in real life through a simulation. During 2017 the project developed and launched its new educational environmental tool – greentourism.eu, which helps maintain the competitiveness of European tourism industry, by teaching students and workers how to make sustainable choices that preserve Europe's heritage and environment. The case studies on the site give an overview of European hotels that are pioneers in sustainability. Special attention is paid to the best practices section of the site, which has 12 categories where businesses can make sustainable choices. The categories where hotels, restaurants and other tourism establishments can significantly save money by making the right improvements include water, energy, waste, but also green purchasing and transport. Communication and social responsibility, as well as the nature and cultural heritage aspects are equally important to consider when developing tourism sustainably in a region. The greentourism.eu webpage is available in English, Bulgarian, Estonian and Finnish. The website was introduced during three specialized trainings held in the summer of 2017 in the project partner countries for environmental protection specialists, sustainable tourism experts, teachers and professionals from the accommodation sector.
