  • Published on June 25, 2019
Every year CUTS observe Green Action week (GAW) in Jaipur District as an activity under the Project ProOrganic-II. This year (2018) the theme of GAW was "Sharing Community". Focusing on the theme, activities had been planned to educate consumers about kitchen gardening, compost procedure and sharing food to avoid wastage. For this, CUTS had selected two Communities (Ramnagar and Meenavala) of Jaipur.
Objective of the Campaign: * Raise consumer awareness on the Environmental Impacts of consumption and to promote sustainable patterns of consumption. * Generate awareness among consumers about organic vegetables and fruits that would encourage consumers to shift towards organic agricultural products and sustainable consumption. * To minimize the waste and reduces pressure on natural resources. * To increase the supply of goods and services, making them more affordable. * To empower people to create, trade, swap, access and share goods, services and resources among themselves. Key observation: •Sharing is in our culture, but we are just moving ahead from this. •People of Jaipur are willing to come together and to work collectively. •People are willing to share their things and ideas. •We don’t have proper mechanism to do so. •People are interested in developing kitchen gardens. Activities under the Campaign: •50 Neighborhood Kitchen Gardens (Introductory meetings & Feedback meetings) •10 Community Owned Compost units were set up in two targeted community at common places. Five households each were encouraged to put wet waste in these units. Women from the community were trained on the composting process. Kitchen Gardens were developed by in selected communities by using community compost. Households were encouraged to set up these kitchen gardens and grow organic vegetables by using compost from their kitchen waste and to share within the community. •2 School Campaign •2 Awareness Rally with students •6 Street plays •Community Level Stakeholder’s Consultation •Community Library was also set up in Jaipur city, where targeted community members were motivated to share their old books which can be utilised by the other students. Idea was appreciated by the people as they find it activity worthy. •Community Wall “Wall of Kindness (Saanjha Ki Deewar)" were set up, where people can put their used and unused household items like clothes, Crockery items, books etc to share with other community members. •Stakeholder’s Consultation The GAW activities has contributed in raising consumer awareness of the environmental impacts of consumption and promote sustainable patterns of consumption; in generating awareness among consumers about organic vegetables and fruits that would encourage consumers to shift towards organic agricultural products and sustainable consumption; in promoting consumers demand for organic vegetables and fruits; in fostering policy and practice for promoting the use of organic agricultural products thereby contributing towards sustainable pattern of consumption; and in encouraging more people to consumer organic products and thereby promoting a shift towards an ecologically sustainable food system for all. Besides, for the first time, a feeling of sharing was felt, recognized and well accepted by a society at large in many ways like sharing of household items, agriculture items like seeds and vermi compost manures etc. and readable books. This has not only brought a feeling of sharing of unusable or excess above items but have also brought the society closer by way of donating and sharing the unused and excess household items, which can be well used by others, who are not in a position to buy. This unique activity could also able to generate a feeling of sufficient availability of organic or other sustainable products, which ultimately tend to sustainable consumption. The Green Action Week Fund India is a joint partnership established between the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) and CUTS International in 2017.The purpose of the grant is to fund short-term campaigning activities to raise consumer awareness on environmental issues. CUTS with the support of SSNC is implementing ProOrganic project in Rajasthan since 2013 with specific objective of promoting organic farming and consumption in the state by involving CSOs in generating awareness, capacity building and advocacy. CUTS is also running Green Action Week campaign in Jaipur city since then to generate awareness among common consumers on organic food and sustainable consumption. Announcement-GAW Fund India 2019
