Global Search for Sustainable Schools-Namibia

  • Published on December 18, 2019
This project is undertaken as part of the Global Search for Sustainable Schools which supports the development of sustainable schools in 9 countries around the world. In Namibia, the project is being implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in partnership with the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology and the National Environmental Education Network (NEEN).
The main objective of the Project is to mobilize and empower the youth to be drivers for the adoption of sustainable lifestyles among the broader population. This project will substantially advance the implementation of the sustainable lifestyles and education programme of the 10-YFP of sustainable consumption and production patterns. This will be achieved by mainstreaming sustainable lifestyles into formal education and environmental education centers, making sustainable lifestyles the guiding principle in every school environment; and mobilizing and empowering the youth to promote sustainable lifestyles. Education is key to deepen knowledge and building capacity towards sustainable living at the global, regional, and national levels. Young people played a key role in shaping the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development and are recognized a critical agents of change, that are expected to find in the Goals a platform to channel their infinite capacities for activism into the creation of a better world. This Project recognizes the importance of the youth in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and seeks to provide a platform for the youth to build and unleash their capacities for the creation of a better world. The project will play an important role by developing skills among the youth, creating the space for positive changes in the daily school environment, and ultimately lead towards better environmental-related actions and behavior. Stakeholders can get involved in this Project through submitting their application for selection as school; through visiting environmental education centers as school or youth groups in order to learn about sustainable lifestyles; or as communities, government agencies, private businesses and NGOs forming partnerships with schools in order to promote sustainable lifestyles within their schools and communities.
