  • Published on January 15, 2021
The overall goal is to support the transition towards a sustainable and fair food system in Arusha & Ouagadougou that increases the accessibility of safe and healthy food to all consumers including marginalized groups, generates a fair income for all actors throughout the chain and reduces the ecological impact on the planet. We want specifically to encourage the participation of young agri-entrepreneurs in bringing about this transition. A Generation Food incubator has the following specific objectives: 1. To support the development of agri-businesses that deliver sustainable solutions for the cities' most pressing food system challenges 2. To increase employment of young people 3. To increase youth participation in food system decision-making 4. To enable young people to become ambassadors of safe and sustainable food in their networks and amongst their peers and raise awareness of the importance of consuming safe & sustainable food.
Arusha: * A communication campaign (social media, flyers on the agro-fair, posters in the city, radio) was conducted to raise awareness of the project and to call on young entrepreneurs to participate in the hackathon. * 158 young entrepreneurs participated in the hackaton and received basic business training ; 70 of them were selected to participate in a 2-week bootcamp where they received more intensive training and where they directly brought into contact with financial institutions, the bureau of standards, government, and potential private partners. * A revolving growth fund was set up as a seed fund for the young entrepreneurs where they can lend small funds to boost their businesses. * In December, a 6-months incubation trajectory has started for 25 selected entrepreneurs Ouagadougou: * A communication campaign, a hackaton, and a first selection via a pitch-competion were already implemented
