Food Industries for People and Planet (FIPP)

  • Published on January 14, 2019
IFPRI's new research program on Food Industries for People and Planet (FIPP) will expand traditional ways of thinking about the global food system and will provide evidence-based policy assessments aimed at making agri-food industries and food systems more inclusive in terms of employment and income opportunities, more efficient in terms of meeting global food needs, and conducive to the promotion of healthy diets and environmentally sound production.
Through this program, IFPRI will provide evidence-based policy assessments to make agri-food industries and food systems more inclusive in terms of employment and income opportunities, more efficient in meeting the food needs of the growing global population, and more conducive to the promotion of healthy diets and environmentally sound food systems. The FIPP program will address key policy questions through integrated country-, value chain-, and company-specific studies that will look across the wider spectrum of the agri-food industry. The research program aims to focus on three interrelated areas of research: (1) Improving agri-food market efficiency and access (2) Innovation for inclusive agri-food value chains development (3) Incentives for safer, healthier, and more sustainable food - Three research consortium round table meetings between research centres, private food companies, policy makers and CSOs (Washington D.C., June 2018; Bangkok, November 2018; Brussels, February 2019). - Joint research proposals are being prepared building on ongoing research • Improving our understanding of the implications of food business market strategies and dynamics for global food security and nutrition • Piloting interventions that develop inclusive value chains • Collecting, analyzing, and utilizing data to help reduce food loss and waste through targeted interventions • Undertaking cost-effectiveness studies of price and regulatory incentives to influence both consumer and modern food industry supply behaviors that encourage food safety and the adoption of healthy diets • Providing evidence on the environmental impacts of modern food systems and on incentive schemes promoting the development and adoption of innovative, sustainable technologies Stakeholders can join the multistakeholder research consortium by sending an e-mail to IFPRI-FIPP@cgiar.org to the attention of Rob Vos
