  • Published on February 12, 2022

The objective of the project was to develop and maintain an online platform that enables humanitarian organizations and individuals to retrieve food surplus (fruits and vegetables) from the food retailer Delhaize that meet all the criteria defined for products suitable for food donation and are safe for human consumption, and for the purpose of further assistance and nutrition of their end-users. The platform developed by UNDP Serbia in cooperation with food retailer Delhaize, Food Bank, and humanitarian organizations is based on blockchain technology, which contributes to the security and traceability of the entire process.

By donating food surplus, the project contributes to two main SDGs  - SDG 12 - Sustainable Consumption and Production, and in particular 12.3 - By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses, as well as the SDG 2 – Zero Hunger. The Platform enables the food retailer to organize its surplus of declassified fruits and vegetables to be available for humanitarian organizations together with the information on the food and complete history of the food chain. The Platform enables traceability and complete history of the actions, no modifications will be allowed once the transaction is executed. The platform is designed as scalable and adaptable to other companies and supplier to join the platform in the later stages.

The donations are intended for the humanitarian organizations of the Food Bank Belgrade, through which they reach the end-users, individuals who need help. In this way, through cooperation with more than 60 humanitarian organizations, fruits and vegetables reach about 7,500,000 citizens every day, while from the beginning of the food donation project "We help those who don't have it" to the launch of the digital platform, more than 5,000 tons of food.

All the amount of food donated is visible on the platform, and the interested organization, which is a user of the Food Bank, will have a clear overview of the products available, as well as an overview of stores where it is possible to pick up the donation.
