The winners in the respective categories are determined on the basis of the following evaluation criteria: Topic accuracy, creativity & innovation, commitment, success and exemplary effect. In 2020, prizes worth a total of 15,000 euros will again be awarded. The 7-member jury consists of representatives from business, science and civil society.
As part of the "Too Good for the Bin!" initiative, the Federal Award "Too Good for the Bin!" contributes to achieving the United Nations' SDG 12.3 of halving food waste by 2030 by creating incentives to become active in concrete projects against food waste and by raising public awareness for this topic in general.
