The Courtauld Committment 2025

WRAP brokers and manages this sector-wide voluntary agreement, accelerating change in ways that governments, individual companies or community groups cannot achieve on their own. We forge powerful partnerships, bringing together organisations that would not normally work together to work towards common goals. WRAP, by providing guidance and tools, wants its signatories to identify priorities, develop solutions and implement changes to cut the carbon, water and waste associated with food & drink by at least one-fifth in 10 years. Other key objectives and goals of the commitment are:The targeted overall outcomes from 2015 to 2025 calculated as a relative reduction per head of population, are: - 20% reduction in food and drink waste arisings in the UK - 20% reduction in the GHG intensity of food and drink consumed in the UK - A reduction in impact associated with water use in the supply chain These goals are clearly aligned with both sustainable consumption and production, with the focus on all areas of the food chain creating changes that could not be realised individually. There are already over 156 organisations signed up to the Courtauld Commitment, as either business signatories or engagement partners. These organisations range from major food retailers to local authorities, packaging associations to government departments. A baseline report, recording food waste in 2015 in the UK has been published, which will be used for comparison in 2025, and at other milestone points. In 2017, WRAP also published a review about the first year of the commitment, with a video from the signatory summit event. The video shows the signatories discussing the merits of the commitment. WRAP expects that the commitment will mean the UK reaches the 2025 goal to cut by one fifth the resources needed to provide the UK’s food & drink, in ten years. In the first year of Courtauld 2025, signatories agreed to double the amount of surplus food redistributed for human consumption by 2020. This means an additional 60 million meals, worth an estimated £60 million, could feed people in need each year, not only reducing waste, but helping people in need. In 2019, the first report on achievements against the specific C2025 targets will be published. This will compare 2018 data, collected from signatories, with the baseline data (2015).
