Change of Practice at Disneyland Paris: conserving practices at Disneyland Paris
The One Planet programme strives to introduce Responsible Consumption and Production in tourism. Aside from aviation, tourist accommodation accounts for 24% of tourism's carbon emissions and hotels represent the second most energy-intensive building types. Our project tackles the energy, water and waste at tourist accommodation and stimulates innovation to help introduce more sustainable consumption and production in this key sub-sector. Our objective at Disneyland is to reduce consumption through changes in practice involving reception staff, maintenance team and management, plus changes in practice for visiting guests. Specifically, we wanted to: - identify where the changes in practice were required in the thermal comfort of the 1000 hotel - what are the impacts of housekeeping services - what are the guest thermal comfort preferences and levels of water use - introduce technologies which inform staff to optimise the thermal comfort levels whilst saving energy at the hotel Secondly, at the self-contained cabins we wanted to: - measure electricity and water use - measure inside temperature - measure the use of windows for thermal comfort - train staff to approach guests and invite them to conserve resources during their stay - Monitor guest use of resources PLEASE NOTE: Disney is happy for their name to be used in reporting our One Planet activities, but no permission has been given for the reproduction of the above information nor use of any images.
The expected outcomes of the change in practice: Increase staff knowledge about the amount of resource used for appliances inside the self-contained cabins for both electricity: for electricity - cooker, fridge, microwave, coffee machine, toaster, making hot water, radiators and a/c; for water - use of the toilet, shower. This allows them to better advise guests on how to save resources. Guests understand that they are being monitored and receive hourly updated feedback on temperature, weather, their electricity and water usage, which makes them more mindful of their footprint and self motivates them to conserve. Management can use the data to better design change when retrofitting. The expected achievements in shifting to sustainable consumption and production practices: Increase in staff confidence in delivering the My Green Butler service and raising guest stay satisfaction. Guests to save over 5% of resource use and increase their sorting of recyclable materials. New practices introduced in reducing inside temperature during winter periods, guidelines for housekeeping staff and improvements in retrofitting design will save energy and water.
