"Wasteless" Program against food waste

  • Published on January 25, 2021
About one third of food waste in Hungary is produced in households; nearly half of it could have been avoidable. Annual 300 000 tonnes of biodegradable waste has a serious impact on our environment, considering its production and destruction as well. The “Wasteless” programme of the National Food Chain Safety Office aims at decreasing the amount of Hungarian food wasted.

The Program has four main targets:

1. Reducing the proportion of food waste in Hungarian households by changing consumer attitudes and behaviours.

2. Increasing the level of knowledge and awareness of primary school students on the topic of food waste.

3. Collecting good practices promoting the prevention of food waste, and on the basis of these, developing its own guide for the relevant actors in the food chain, in line with domestic legal practice.

4. Establish cooperative relationships with other EU Member States to facilitate the international implementation of project elements

The most important materials are bilingual (English and Hungarian).

A complex School Programme has been developed:

BOOKS
We published a student’s book, a workbook complemented by a teachers’ handbook.

ANIMATED VIDEOS
In line with the 6 chapters of the student’s book, 6 short animation movies have been created aiming to support teachers having only a little time for inserting the topic of food waste in their educational programme.

ANIMATED PRESENTATIONS
Besides the animation movies, 6 1 digital animated presentations have also been created. The first 6 presentations follow the chapters of the student’s book, while the 7
th is a summary ppt with quizzes included. These materials provide support for teachers to prepare for the lessons.

GAME

As part of the School Programme, the categorizer game helps children to be aware, which food waste categories exist and which is the one they should really focus on.
