"Too Good for The Bin!"-Initiative

  • Published on December 17, 2019
As part of a campaign to reduce food waste among consumers and along the entire supply chain, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture launched the "Too good for the bin!" initiative to engage citizens, companies and organizations in saving food. The goal of the initiative is to halve the estimated 11 million tons of wasted food (annually – according to a study conducted on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety) by 2030.
The website of the initiative www.zugutfuerdietonne offers background information and tips for everyday life. These show how we can better buy, store and eat food. The website also provides cooking ideas for leftovers, many of them are published in cooperation with top chefs and celebrities. Additionally, own recipe ideas can be posted and shared with others. Action days are held in 17 cities throughout Germany and campaigns such as "Enjoy without residue" are initiated with over 40,000 leftover boxes in German restaurants. Materials are offered for initiatives, exhibitions, local authorities, teachers among others. Information brochures are available as well as posters in various sizes, stickers and craft sheets.
