Sustainability along all value chains: identifying and promoting local initiatives linking small-scale producers and consumers [CORE]

  • Published on February 8, 2018
The objective of this activity is to focus on adapting participatory guarantee systems (PGS) to the regulatory regime of Geographic Indications (GIs). GIs can be used by producers to protect and brand specific qualities, but often rely upon costly third-party certification. The activity will conduct research and develop guidance on how GIs that use PGS can contribute to SFS.
Participatory Guarantee Systems are mentioned in the African Union stratey on Geographical Indications, which was approved in october of 2017. The research and collaboration to engage in the implementation of this policy will begin in 2018.
