South Africa’s 4th Biennial Update Report

  • Published on February 18, 2022

Cabinet approved submission of the country's 4th Biennial Update Report-which provides an update on the update on the country's efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change-to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). the report outlines the policies implemented as well as measures and indications undertaken by the country to stabilise GHG emissions within the country's developmental imperatives. As a signatory to the UNFCCC, South Africa is expected to submit these reports on a regular basis.

This report update supports a shift to SCP by influencing government's public procurement and to this extent, the government has rolled-out and independent power producers (IPP) programme in which the IPPs should be providing clean and renewable energy to incrementally move away from reliance on coal-fired power stations which at the moment is the mainstay of South Africa's energy production.
