Repairability index

  • Published on February 16, 2023

Since 1 January 2021, a repairability index is enforced in France for five categories of electronic and home appliance products. This tool, introduced by the law against waste and for the circular economy, aims at better informing the consumer about the repairability of his / her purchases. Thanks to the display of a score 1 to 10, this index informs the consumers about the repairability of the products concerned. At first, the obligation concerned the following product categories: front-loading washing machines, smartphones, laptops, TV monitors, and electric lawn mowers. Since 4 November 2022, four new categories are also concerned: top-loading washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaner, and high pressure cleaners. Moreover, the law foresees that by 2024 the index is replaced by – or becomes - a durability index through the inclusion of additional criteria related to product reliability and robustness. Work with stakeholders has started for this purpose.

In 2022, a first implementation assessment has shown that the index is popular with consumers and already benefits from quite a good level of notoriety. It has also contributed to make product repairability and repair more strategic for brands (producers and retailers). Some manufacturers have worked on some criteria to improve their repairability score (better design, better availability of spare parts and documentation, etc.).
