  • Published on January 14, 2020
The main goal of this policy is to ensure all the regulations, plans and master plans related to the management of waste are build up on a common known framework and ideology. Moreover, the policy underlines responsibilities of various parties such as common households, island and atoll councils, government etc.. Most importantly the national policy comprises a total of 10 policy objectives. These include individuals and households being responsible to manage the waste produced by them according to the rules and guidelines set by the municipal council of that island. Also, under this policy, a waste management plan should be developed in each inhabited island by the island council and community, and the plan should be approved and implemented. A mechanism where fees are to be taken from households and used for the management of the waste is also to implemented through this policy. Moreover, the policy encourages islands at which an income could be generated through waste to carryout such projects and use the income to further manage the waste generated. One of the main policy objective is to conduct nation wide programs on training and raising awareness on management of waste.
The following are some of the expected outcomes of this policy that would help shifting to sustainable consumption and production practices in the Maldives: 1. Minimising the direct and indirect negative impact caused to human health and the environment due to waste. 2. Compiling the standards to be maintained in relation to waste management. 3. Establishing an environmentally friendly, safe and sustainable waste management system through an integrated waste management structure. 4. Encouraging to minimise, reuse, recycle and recover waste. 5. Implementing polluters pay principle. 6. Introducing extended producer responsibility.
