National Program on Sustainable Consumption and Production in Chile
The Sustainable Consumption and Production Program is a guiding document and strategic axis of initiatives in the field of sustainable consumption and production in Chile. We hope, in turn, to be able to agree on an Action Plan to identify specific initiatives and specific commitments in order to advance the objectives of the Program to ensure the protection of our environmental heritage, promote a better quality of life and achieve a new sustainable development .
To face the national and international challenge, the Ministry of the Environment created, in March 2014, the Interministerial Committee of Sustainable Consumption and Production (CCPS). The main objective is to coordinate and implement the various initiatives on sustainable consumption and production that Chile is promoting, designing for this purpose the National Program of Sustainable Consumption and Production (PNCS) which is presented in this document. The Program aims to be an instrument that, through its different lines of action, will promote economic growth to contribute to the protection of the environment and social equity, modifying the current consumption and production patterns, decoupling the growth and development of the country of the degradation of the environment. For the preparation of the PNCPS, the CCPS participated in a mapping that included the collection of secondary information, from which 158 initiatives were identified in the public sector associated mainly with production (energy, industry, agriculture and construction sector). This mapping was made with the purpose of knowing the gaps, needs and opportunities of the actions of the public sector. Additionally, a survey was conducted based on interviews, which yielded a total of 77 relevant initiatives, mostly associated with consumption and production in the energy, education, construction and agricultural sectors. In addition to an international review and incorporating the main results of the national mapping, the twelve lines of action and the prioritization criteria for the National Sustainable Consumption and Production Program were defined. Both the prioritization criteria and the lines of action are also the result of a process of work and consultation with the Interministerial Committee on Sustainable Consumption and Production and the Consultative Committee.
