National Action Plan on Air Pollutants
The purpose of this national action plan is to identify the effectiveness of the planned and proposed mitigation measures to reduce air pollution emissions, which are aligned with the Maldives climate mitigation targets. Moreover, this plan builds on existing plans and strategies in the Maldives that include mitigation measures (that can affect air pollution emissions), but for which the air pollution emission reduction potential has not yet been evaluated. Finally, specific actions to increase implementation of the air pollution mitigation measures are identified, hence if followed, improving the air quality management in general in the Maldives.
This action plan consist control measures and actions to implement the measure for transport, electricity and waste sector. The actions that support the shift to sustainable consumption and production practices include exploration and introduction of financing mechanisms for solar PV in households, islands and rooftops. Furthermore, awareness campaigns on the financial and environmental benefits of solar PV are actioned out in the plan. Actions to improve the energy and power efficiency are also indicated hence, taking a step for sustainable production. One exceptional action is to develop and implement a plan to phase out conventional lighting and switching to LED tubes in the public sector. The actions for waste sector are to procure incinerators that will stop open burning of waste and implementation of waste to energy projects. All these actions will increase the resource efficiency, create a low carbon economy, improve the well being and health of the community and build empowered and responsible citizens.
