European Union Directive 2019/904 of 5 June 2019 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment (Single Use Plastics)
Single Use Plastic (SUP) items represent about half of all marine litter items found on European beaches. The initiative focuses on the ten most found SUP and fishing gear. Where alternatives are readily available and affordable, SUP are to be banned. For products without clear alternatives, the focus is on limiting their use through a reduction in consumption; design and labeling requirements and waste management/clean-up obligations for producers.
Reduce the use of Single Use Plastics, notably avoiding oceans pollution.
The single-use plastic products covered by measures under this Directive are estimated to
represent around 86 % of the single-use plastics found, in counts, on beaches in the Union. The Impact Assessment estimated that SUP marine litter could be reduced by half.
