Energy labeling of energy related products

Energy Efficiency (EE) is nowadays one of the most important policies tackling the climate changes issue and sustainable growth as well. This is recognized in the EU through the so-called Energy Efficiency First principle, which recognizes that the biggest domestic energy source is energy efficiency. Setting the demanding targets for EE for period until 2030, and after, should establish the path for sustainable energy production and consumption. In achieving these goals, the EU has introduced requirements in technical regulations for products in mass consumer use, which influence much final energy consumption, in order to reduce energy consumption.

Energy Labeling Regulation (EU) 2017/1369, targets final consumers to buy and use efficient products, based on the information presented on the energy label. This Regulation followed the Directive 2010/30/EU, which first set the requirements for labeling of energy-related products, especially targeting household appliances. 

Although Serbia has been still in compliance with old Directive 2010/30/EU on labeling, by 2014, we achieved to adopt delegated acts that introduced new labeling requirements for 4 product groups: washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, and electronic screens. Rulebook on energy labeling of light sources is in the process of adoption.

The main obstacles for traders and buyers regarding differences in labels have been overcome through the implementation of the Project Establishing and strengthening of the conformity assessment bodies for the implementation of energy labeling and eco-design directives, which the Ministry of Mining and Energy implements.

Besides obvious effects in reducing energy consumption, by encouraging use of efficient appliances, Serbia reaches to comply with the energy efficiency regulations and the same obligation for suppliers and traders will be prescribed in Serbia as in the EU.
