Act on amending certain laws on energy and waste management’ (provisions on the obligation to reduce food waste)

The Act no. II. of 2021 on amending certain laws on energy and waste management stipulates the mandatory separate collection (or collection and recovery at the place of generation) of bio-waste, which must be ensured from 31 December 2023.

This target is set out in the National Waste Management Plan 2021-27 as an action line.

The Act no. II. of 2021 transposes the provisions of the circular economy directive package into the Hungarian national law.

Based on the legal background, the target of reducing food waste is set out in the National Waste Management Plan, 2021-27 as an action line.

Further actions set out in the National Waste Management Plan fostering reducing food waste:

·         Development of processing and recycling capacities

·         Promoting home and community composting

·         Promotion of agricultural recycling, development of a quality assurance system

·         Development of a methodology for the uniform measurement of food waste (carried out)

·         Development of a marketing strategy and a national approach to improving the market position of compost produced from bio-waste collected in the framework of public services
