  • Published on January 15, 2018
Destinations, businesses and tourism intermediaries can use the Tourism 2030 site to develop tourism products & services in line with the 2030 Goals. The sustainable tourism development portal brings together a global knowledge & innovation community of tourism professionals, containing analyses of the main topics, key organisations and information sources, good practice examples, certification programmes & their certified products and services in the world’s largest green tourism market place
The Tourism 2030 Portal provides a multi-stakeholder knowledge base for tourism stakeholders to implement sustainable development through the cross cutting vector of tourism. Originating as a collaborative partnership response by the EEA, Ecotrans, UN-WTO and UNEP to the WSSD Agenda 21 process, the Portal brings three decades of past sustainable tourism development experience at the highest level together with the latest contemporary research and market-place developments in the field of ICT, travel and tourism to support working together to meet UNs 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030). The 10 Tourism 2030 key topics - ranging from Climate Change to Value Chains - provide an integrated contents list for covering all sustainable tourism thematics. It is aimed at those wishing to have guidance and tools to implement sustainable and responsible tourism anywhere in the world. The guidance is found in a public access knowledge base that is maintained by the TRIANGLE Knowledge Alliance of Higher Education Institutes, containing up-to-date subject information and best practices examples for evidence-based decision making. T The tools are for professionals who wish to measure, map, manage, market and/monitor sustainable travel and tourism development. For example the Green Travel Maps - Travel Green Europe Mapping App enables a destination to scan its potential green tourism offer and develop a local/regional/national map of sustainable tourism products and services. (cf https://destinet.eu/who-who/market-place/green-travel-maps-1/green-travel-maps-europe) With the objective of providing state of the art ICT knowledge networking for stakeholders to practically implement sustainable development through tourism, the Portal has been designed for use as an online office that can be used by professionals working in teams from different stakeholder groups or countries for project management, especially where the project involves sustainable & responsible travel and tourism. It has specialist information on certification and sustainability reporting for SMEs and destinations, providing a Certification Quickfinder and Best Practice Browser for those who have an interest in the role of certification in the supply chain and the green economy. The Portal hosts the world's largest independent sustainable and responsible travel and tourism market-place, mapping first-, second- and third-party independently assessed tourism products and services. The TRIANGLE (Tourism Research Innovation And Next Generation Learning Experience) Knowledge Alliance are using the Portal a Europe-wide training and education platform hosting a series of sustainable tourism courses linked to the knowledge base for training sustainable tourism certification and auditing skills, as well as supporting their students learning with the public access portal topics and best practice sections Travel Green Germany has been the pilot for the Travel Green Planet system (see https://destinet.eu/market-place/green-travel-maps/green-travel-maps-europe/germany). Anyone can use the platform to create their own Travel Green destination folder for themselves. Mapping software is their to create a picture of the sustainable and responsible travel and tourism offers in your area. If a destination needs help, the Portal offers expert services and advice to help you develop destination or business sustainability. Seminars, webinars and destination triple bottom line business plans are offered as part of the Portal support through its training, education and development services. In 2018/19 three Apps will be available as tools to support work towards the SDGs using the tourism sector as a focus for sustainable development activities: 1. the Global Sustainable Tourism Certification Quickfinder https://destinet.eu/resources/tools/certification-quickfinder 2. the Travel Green Europe App https://destinet.eu/market-place/green-travel-maps/green-travel-maps-europe/travel-green-europe-app/ 3. the Sustainable Tourism Good Practice Browser https://destinet.eu/good-practices/good-practice-browser The online office is being used in the EU Erasmus-funded EcoAct project in Turkey to create Travel Green Black Sea and other green maps using the Travel Green Mapping service. Since the Portal was launched in the 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, full impacts are not to be expected until 2019. Impacts for the following stakeholders are expected: Destinations will be able to manage their sustainable tourism development more effectively. The indicator too to measure impacts for this will be the green maps of the territory. Businesses will be able to green themselves and their supply chains to actively implement SCP 12, to be measured by the number of certified businesses mapped in the portal. Professionals will be trained in the knowledge, skills and value systems of sustainable tourism development, measured in the number of Portal users and students passing through the TRIANGLE system. Travellers can learn from a validated professional and academic about green and responsible travel options and related issues. This impact will be directly measured in the portal through the development of online visitor feed back systems in the Apps.
