This project is under the Sustainable Lifestyles and Education (SLE) programme, one of the programmes of the 10YFP. It aims to foster the uptake of sustainable lifestyles as the common norm, with the objective of ensuring their positive contribution to addressing global challenges, such as resource efficiency and biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, poverty eradication and social well-being. This will be done through multidisciplinary research and multi-stakeholder cooperation, through the promotion of participative and bottom-up approaches, innovative policies, economic instruments and technologies, awareness-raising, as well as through all forms of education.
The SLE programme is co-led by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan and the Government of Sweden represented by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). Develop the ability of schools to develop and integrate sustainability in school curriculum, infrastructure, and management / administration principles / practices as well as local communities. Involve teachers and young students to actively participate in the implementation of education for sustainable development and lifestyle in their schools and encourage them to introduce sustainable practices in school and the daily lives of students and their communities. The result of the project will be an increase in the number of children in pilot schools who are able to assess the processes and problems occurring in the community and carry out their activities in view of sustainable production and consumption.
During the reporting period, within the framework of the project: - The global search criteria have been adapted to the national context, an application for schools has been developed, a republican selection of schools has been conducted, detailed information is available at: https://is.gd/ev0CH8. On December 17, 2019 at the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic (hereinafter SAEPF), an inception seminar was held to launch the national initiative "Promoting a sustainable lifestyle through the creation of a network of sustainable schools". Earlier, at the national level, Criteria for the search for sustainable schools were developed and the process of collecting applications from schools was launched, which ended on November 30, 2019 at 18.00. For an objective consideration and selection of applications received, an order was issued by the SAEPF and a competitive commission was formed (dated December 9, 2019 No. 01-9 / 321). During two days of the meeting of the Competition Commission, 73 applications were reviewed from schools, colleges and professional lyceums of practically all of the regions of the republic. A total of 4 schools were selected. The main reason for the launch of the Global Search for Sustainable Schools project was the global and local environmental problems, that have been caused by the growth of the World population, growth of consumers, a negative active impact on the climate, loss of biodiversity, etc. The next step is developing school curriculums and implementation budgets, as well as the practical implementation of responsible consumption and production activities in the Sustainable School winner schools, as well as the development towards the sustainability in their educational institutions at certain levels of the program. In the meantime, the capacity and potential for the sustainable schools' integration and support by the developing of the environmental education materials will be strengthening. An awareness-raising campaign will be developed and implemented in order to encourage participation in the project and in a sustainable way of life. - An Expert Working Group of specialists from the Kyrgyz Academy of Education was created, a study was conducted on the topic of integrating the topics of responsible consumption and production into state educational standards in three subjects: "mathematics", "geography", "Man and society". Teaching aids for teachers and students on sustainable production and consumption have been developed. - In order to receive grants, schools are developing plans for introducing sustainable methods into school infrastructure and in management plans. - Developed guidelines for grants to schools. - Conducted teacher awareness seminars and 1 start seminar to launch a project in the country (3 in total). - A joint information platform (website) was created for the exchange and dissemination of information and knowledge in the field of sustainable consumption and production - http://ecoschool.kg/, a communication plan was developed, a project page on Facebook was created and constantly updated: https: //is.gd/hovYpf
Impact and Results
The Kyrgyz Republic has become one of 9 countries participating in the Global Search for Sustainable Schools since March 2019. The global search for sustainable schools aims to help transition to sustainable development schools all over the world. In the Kyrgyz Republic this project is implementing by the Public Association “Institute for Regional Development” under the supervision and coordination of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic (SAEPF KR). First, according to the Global criteria, national school search and evaluation criteria were developed and approved by IGES. On October 14, the National Search for Sustainable Schools was announced, which was completed on November 30, 2019.In parallel, the Communication Strategy and Action Plan was developed. The Facebook page of the project was created and updated on a social network Facebook and Instagram, the project website was created and updated. Also was created an expert working group of specialists from the Kyrgyz Academy of Education, who analyzed the integration of ESD and SCP issues in school education. They are engaged in the development of a teaching aid for a teacher and a study guidance for a student, which will be tested on the basis of the winning schools. In September, national Kick-off workshop was conducted in Bishkek and Chui oblast. On the basis of the order of the SAEPF KR, a competitive commission was formed (from 09/12/2019 №01-9/321), which hold meetings from December 9 to 11 and chose the winning schools. The minutes of the meeting of the tender commission have been prepared. On December 17, the kick-off seminar “Global Search for Sustainable Schools in the Kyrgyz Republic” was held. The workshop was attended by the leadership of SAEPF KR, Republican children and youth center of ecology, local history and tourism, Kyrgyz Academy of Education, NGOs, school teachers and representatives of the winning schools. Certificates were awarded to the winning schools. The meeting was held with the directors of the winning schools to discuss the work plans and budgets of schools. Representatives of KTRK, STV, Channel 5, News.KG participated in the work of the event, the information is also available on the project page in the Facebook.
