Objectives

IFC’s Green Buildings Market Transformation Program helps to create a virtuous cycle of supply and demand for resource-efficient building design, construction and ownership. The aim is to set a metrics-driven definition of what constitutes a green building, reward property developers for building green, increase regulatory pull, and promote direct investment. The Program aims to certify as green 20% of new construction in key sectors and markets around the world, serving as the shifting point after which the market will demand green.

Activities

IFC has a four-part strategy for promoting green construction, with results in the following:

Investment and advice in the building sector: Over $4.5 billion invested from IFC's balance sheet in green construction. Relationships with developers and associations around the world.

Investment and advisory for banks: Over $500 million invested in financial institutions for green construction and mortgages. Ambitious program signed with the UK Government to deploy $150 million in concessional financing and advice to local FI's to finance green buildings.

Green building codes and incentives: Direct advice to several national and local governments around the world to create implementable green building codes. Tracking of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives for green construction on EDGE website.

EDGE certification program: Over 4.5 million square meters certified through a program tailored to emerging markets, with a robust database of case studies.

Impact and Results

4.5 million m2 certified so far, with the aim to certify 20% of new construction in key markets around the world. Comprehensive database of certified projects, including their impact and technical solutions, available at https://www.edgebuildings.com/projects/
