Food loss and waste is a major global issue and is now addressed under SDG Target 12.3 - “to halve the per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses and waste (FLW) along production and supply chains including post-harvest losses.“ Some countries have initiated processes that target FLW measurement for prevention, reduction and management and need support and advice on how this can be done, other countries need encouragement to begin measuring their baseline.
This project proposal seeks to take stock of the current state of knowledge and on-going methodological activities, share approaches and promote harmonization of FLW measurement around SDG 12.3. UN Environment and FAO, together with collaborating and facilitating organizations, will strengthen tools developed, address knowledge gaps, develop capacities and promote awareness and advocacy to stem the problem.
The programme builds on a substantive body of work being implemented by FAO’s Economic and Social Department, including work on the Global Initiative on Food Loss and Waste Reduction, the development of the Global Food Loss Index and the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics; Field case studies to identify food loss hotspots and the identification of solutions to address the problems, as well as FAO’s on-going Regional Initiatives: the Near East and North Africa’s Water Scarcity Initiative that prioritises tackling food loss and waste; the Zero Hunger Challenge in the Asia-Pacific Region and FAO’s support to development and implementation of the 2014 Malabo Declaration by African Union Heads of State and Government, one of the targets of which is to halve current levels of post-harvest loss by 2025; the regional network on FLW in the Latin America and Caribbean Region, the collaboration with European projects on food waste reduction in the EU Circular Economy concept. The project also builds on UNEP’s national pilots of the Think Eat Save Guidance document, regional capacity building and global food waste awareness campaign, in addition to the role of UNEP’s Executive Director as Co-Chair of Champions 12.3, a coalition of CEOs catalysing action to deliver SDG Target 12.3.
Impact and Results
The initiative is specifically designed to support the delivery of SDG Target 12.3, the reduction of food loss and waste, and seeks to support this goal in a comprehensive way, through baseline setting and tracking progress, sharing and elaborating tools and methodologies, building partnerships, strengthening technical capacity at national level, and raising public awareness.
