Strengthening Chemical in Product campaign towards effective SAICM Implementation in the Philippines
The EcoWaste Coalition, with support from IPEN’s Chemicals in Products Program, conducted an investigation on the availability of toys containing hazardous chemicals that are sold in the Philippines. The study was prompted by the group’s continuing concern over the sale of toys that have not passed quality and safety standards, including toys laden with toxic metals, phthalates and flame retardants. There’s still a lot of work to do to reach a sustainable life cycle for IT products. Some of the most pressing issues include the overuse of finite natural resources, alarming amounts of e-waste as well as violations of workers’ rights and labour laws in the supply chain.

This project is set up towards emerging strategic direction in the development of agriculture and food production that supports sustainable development is organic farming. The basic aim of the project is to create an assortment of new bakery and confectionery products based on cereals (spelt) and pseudocereals (amaranth, buckwheat), the grains which are agrotechnically and economically convinient for cultivation in organic farming.

In order to strengthen the chemicals in products campaign in Nepal towards effective SAICM implementation in the country using chemical in toys as an example, a comprehensive study of chemicals in products (toys) was carried out by CEPHED and IPEN in January-June 2018 using XRF screening of heavy metals in 52 toys and laboratory analysis of 13 phthalates in five toy samples.

How urban youth can be an engine for achieving sustainable low carbon lifestyles: beginning in Bogota
The overall objective is to enhance and harness understanding on what are low-carbon sustainable lifestyle opportunities for urban citizens (youth) in Bogota; to facilitate their uptake and to feed into the urban policy context. For this, UN Environment and El Bosque University are working with university students in Bogota to develop a participatory process to reduce environmental impact in the city.
Food for Us: Capacity building through research, and trial of a cellular phone application, to reduce on- farm food waste and increase food redistribution in South Africa
This project involves the development and trial of a mobile phone application to trade surplus food from farms and develop a community of practice around the issue of food waste through transformative learning. Phase 1 of the project (funded by the UN's One Planet SLE fund) was trialed in the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces, with the intention to divert surplus crop that might otherwise be be discarded.
