This protocol for the appropriate use and communication of sustainability information derived from hotspots analysis is a companion to the publication 'Hotspots Analysis: a methodological framework' (in particular step 7 of the framework, that involves presenting and communicating the shortlisted hotspots to a wider audience). It provides guiding principles on how to communicate the results of a hotspots analysis and gives examples for visualization of the information. The protocol is aligned with the CI-SCP Guidelines for providing product sustainability information.

Hotspots Analysis (HSA) methodological framework

Hotspots analysis is being used around the world to address significant sustainability challenges by helping to provide focus in an era of information overload. This Methodological Framework aims to support those wishing to commission, conduct or use hotspots analysis studies in a life cycle context, including the support of stakeholders of the 10YFP in their efforts to prioritize their actions to accelerate a shift towards Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). It aims to be equally applicable to businesses, government, as well as individual researchers and other organisations (i.e., NGOs and academic institutions). As a framework, rather than a standard, it provides a degree of flexibility to enable hotpots analysis to be used in differing circumstances. The publication presents HSA with methodology and guidance and aims to provide a consistent approach to hotspots analysis. As an action-oriented methodology, the key outcome is to identify where the greatest opportunity for improvement against an impact occurs. Case studies are provided in this document.

The Long View - Exploring Product Lifetime Extension

The aim of this study is to provide recommendations on the opportunities available to consumers, private sector and especially governments, of developed and developing economies, to address product lifetime extension. Seven products representing different lifetime expectancies by consumers for their optimal replacement moments and actual lifetimes in selected countries are analysed: washing machines, refrigerators, TVs, mobile phones, laptops and clothing. The report provides three policy perspectives, two for developed and one for developing countries, for designing measures to address product lifetime extension.
