About my work

I lead UN Environment's activities in sustainable lifestyles. We make millions of daily decisions. No matter what choices we make, the lifestyles we live meet our needs, determine our well-being and quality of life AND impact the planet and people around us. Consumption habits put natural resources at risk - polluting the planet, not necessarily meeting needs nor making us happy. The amount of stuff has shot up, yet many people still struggle to meet basic needs. As populations grow, the middle class expands and incomes rise, these trends continue. We need to find a way to live life lightly. Living sustainably is also about governments and businesses enacting policies and designing goods and services that guide and offer more (or only) sustainable lifestyle options. In light of ‘more is better’ messaging, activities look at providing real aspirational messaging - aligned with people’s needs and desires, within the planet’s carrying capacity.
