Croatian Sustainability Index (HRIO)

  • Published on January 26, 2022

The Croatian Sustainability Index, HRIO, is a methodology that provides a comprehensive insight into the sustainability of business practices, a review of compliance with the latest European Union regulations and a comparison with the practices of other Croatian companies.

The Croatian Sustainability Index is a practice by which a company integrates, more than the legally prescribed obligations, sustainable development into their decision-making system and thus manages the impact of its business on the environment and society. The Index evaluates business activities in six areas: sustainable corporate governance, environmental management, work environment, community relations, human rights and children's rights.

In order to be a successful company, they must take equal care of their economic, social and environmental impact. Also, they must comply with the latest European directives and standards, global ratings and Sustainable Development Goals in order to achieve a sustainable business model and a way of management in which profits are made in a socially responsible and sustainable way.

The Index consists of in-depth questions related to the sustainability of production processes and supply chain. Questions are also based on CSR criteria that give insight into the impacts that the business has on the environment and its contribution to climate change. The Index also reveals the awareness and importance of sustainability within the business by examining resource consumption and attitudes.

The Index is an excellent tool for companies to self-analyse and track their own sustainability practices and improvement. It can also serve to provide successful sustainable practices examples from other companies in the same sector.

Index varies in complexity based on whether the company is large, medium, small or public, and the awards are also given for all of these categories. HRIO gives information to the public on which companies are the most sustainable, it gives opportunity for companies to build their reputation based on their sustainability practices, but it also helps companies understand which are the areas of sustainability where they have to put more efforts to improve their impacts. In the HRIO process we will award four large awards for large, medium, small and public companies but also six sectoral awards (small) for the best performance in: Sustainable Corporate Governance; Environmental Protection; Working Policies; Human Rights; Diversity Policy and Community Cooperation.
