Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI)

  • Published on November 16, 2017
SRI builds capacity for sustainable recycling in developing countries with a focus on sustainable e-waste management. The programme addresses sustainability criteria in secondary resources management in developing countries and has developed guidance principles for inclusive recycling in a globale ISO process. Activities also include the development of basic data for the assessment of environmental life cycle performance for industrial activities.
(a) Policies and standards for the sustainable management of secondary resources are in-ternationally promoted, recognized and implemented in SRI partner countries. (b) Local capacities for sustainable recycling industries are created, aiming at competitive secondary resource recovery through environmentally and socially sound processes. (c) Basic information required to declare and compare the environmental and social life cycle performance for recycling and other industrial activities along the reverse supply chains in developing and transition countries is available. SRI is funded by the Swiss State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO) and is jointly implemented by the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), the World Resources Forum (WRF) and ecoinvent. The Programme organization includes experts in the field and builds strong local partnerships with governmental organizations, industry and the civil society through three linked programme components: (a) SRI Roundtable: SRI facilitates a stakeholder consultation for the development of sustainability criteria for secondary materials. This has led to the publication of the ISO Guidance Principles for Inclusive Recycling. (b) Recycling Initiatives: SRI improves local capacity for sustainable recycling together with private and public institutions, as well as the informal sector in Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, India, Peru and South Africa. (c) Life Cycle Inventories: SRI develops basic data for the assessment of environmental and social life cycle performance for recycling and other industrial activities through the improvement of local and regional expertise in Brazil, India and South Africa. The intended impact of SRI is the sustainable integration and participation of small and medium enterprises from developing and transition countries in the global recycling of secondary resources.
