Sustainability Assessment of Nabta Smart Town (NST) and Actions for Improvement

  • Published on April 11, 2018
The main objective is the sustainability assessment and subsequent improvement of the Master Plan of the Smart Integrated Development pilot project Nabta Town to be implemented in Borg El Arab, Egypt, and the different building types it will contain. This should be done in line with the recommendations and findings of the recently concluded "EcoNBC Feasibility Study". Another objective is the development of a sustainable urban model that can be locally adapted and replicated in other countries.
The main objective is the sustainability assessment and subsequent improvement of the Master Plan of the Smart Integrated Development pilot project Nabta Town (NST) to be implemented in Borg El Arab, Egypt, and the different building types NST will contain. This should be done in line with the recommendations and findings of the recently concluded "EcoNBC Feasibility Study". Another objective is the development of a sustainable urban model that can be locally adapted and replicated in other countries like e.g. Malaysia and Indonesia. This is in addition to building the capacity of KFHSD staff on the principles and benefits of EcoCities. The implementation will focus specifically on the energy related activities. Therefore, special attention will be paid to energy and resource efficiency when assessing the MP (including passive features, use of indigenous vegetation and local materials, comprehensive sustainable mobility, user behaviour and participation, etc.). Specific tools developed by VTT will be used and adapted to the local conditions if necessary. Nabta Smart Town Project has recently started (January 2018), therefore not many activities have been carried out yet. However, based on the feedback received from the kick-off event, workshop and associated training that were held in Alexandria in February 2018, there are high expectations about the outcomes. In addition, the commitment of the local partner, particular of Khairy Foundation for Human and Social Development (KFHSD) young professionals, and their willingness to learn and contribute is quite remarkable. The next visit to the country will take place most likely in June 2018. In the meantime, KFHSD staff are carrying out the tasks agreed during the first visit and regular Skype calls are held with them. These are the main activities as included in the Implementation Plan: A.1 In detail energy assessment of NST MP A.2 Training KFHSD staff on specific software A.3 Energy categorization of NST building types A.4 Modelling and simulation for energy performance optimization B.1 Dissemination and awareness raising The impacts expected will be measured according to the following indicators: - Number of sustainability measures introduced in NST MP following the recommendations of VTT experts according to the results of the simulations and calculations performed - Potential energy savings and CO2 emissions reduction - Number of NST buildings studied and categorized according to the energy categories proposed by VTT experts - Number of energy optimization measures introduced in NST MP following the recommendations of VTT experts The stakeholders will be invited to join some of the events organized within the project and will also be reached through communication and dissemination activities like e.g. conferences, seminars, etc.
