School water and sanitation

  • Published on January 10, 2019
Gauge has been exploring how current issues with school sanitation can be addressed through alternative sanitation models, such as the use of composting toilets, aqua privies and onsite biological systems. These alternatives avoid problems associated with existing flush toilet (such as large-scale water consumption) and pit latrine (the risk of contaminating groundwater) systems used in many schools and have a range of advantages.
There are significant problems with both waterborne sanitation and pit latrines. This work aims to identify alternatives for schools and housing. Detailed studies, designs and pilots have been carried out. Substantial capital and operating savings as well as water savings are expected. Other benefits such as improved health and support for local enterprise and agriculture are envisaged. Please get in touch if you would like develop / pilot a project in this area.
