Inclusive Tourism

  • Published on January 10, 2019
South Africa's Department of Tourism appointed Gauge to carry out a project support inclusive tourism at key parks around South Africa. Detailed audits with recommendations, operational policy construction drawings, costings and an implementation methodology were developed that can be followed by the Department working with provincial partners to address inclusion at key tourism sites.
The objectives of the initiative are to ensure that national parks and associated facilities such as accommodation, reception area and visitors centres are inclusive of not only local and international visitors but also support local and enhance local economic, social and environmental initatives which support sustainable development. Assessments have been developed, detailed recommendations made, outline policies, operational plans and construction documentation have been developed. These will be refined during implementation through interactive participatory processes. The project is still in its early stages, but has already contributed considerable value by improving local plans, policies and infrastructure proposals through the assessment process, interaction with stakeholders and recommendations. We would welcome interaction with people wishing to make tourism facilities and initiatives more inclusive and sustainable.
