Implementation of Sustainable Consumption and Production In India

The objectives of the initiative is to generate awareness among policy and decision makers on the importance of adoption of SCP approaches in India's sustaianble development policy. A national consultation was held on 28th August, 2018 that brought together various stakeholders from the government, civil society, academia and private sectors to create multi-stakeholder dialogue to mainstream SCP in India. The environmental impacts of the current consumption and production and lifecycle practices and the potential to mitigate these impacts through an inclusive strategy that supports economic growth needed to fuel development in the country was deliberated in the consultation. The consultation sought to assess and determine coherence in policies pertaining to Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) for the betterment of people and nature - vital to the new security agenda. As part of the commencement of this initiative, a national multi-stakeholder consultation was organised to bring all stakeholders on board to the concept of Sustainable Production and Consumption and to understand the status of India's growth in this regard. Based on the outcomes of the workshop, a Vision 2030 document on SCP in India and a Study of Housing in India through the lens of SCP is being developed. The impacts expected from this initiative are to ensure that SCP approaches to adopted in India's development strategy. Further sustainable preferential procurement of building materials needs to be encouraged so as to ensure sustainable housing in India. 1. Participation at Stakeholder Consultation Meetings 2.
