Drinking water in the Maldives

  • Published on November 30, 2018
Maldives drinking water supply is under some strain, even more so as a result of the main desalination plant in 2016. The ROBINSON Club Noonu was opened in the Maldives, located on the 130,000 sqm island around 200 km north of the capital Malé, that took Energy efficiency and water management consideration since the design phase of the beach villas.
Club Robinson Maldives sought to take desalination expertise from other locations (Majorca) and apply it to their own infrastructure. The decision was taken to produce drinking water using inhouse infrastructure and expertise. Our Robinson Club Maldives hotel is committed to sustainable water processing and waste reduction. In 2013, it began to produce its own sparkling water. Club Robinson Maldives sought to take desalination expertise from other locations (Majorca) and apply it to their own infrastructure. In 2013, it began to produce its own sparkling water. Though a process of osmosis, sea water is desalinated, turned into drinking water with the addition of minerals and carbonic acid and then decanted into bottles which are cleaned on site. This has eliminated the need to manufacture, transport and dispose of 400 000 plastic bottles each year.
