SCP in Africa

The African region has a long history of institutional support for SCP, which has been translated into a call for country level action and further mobilization and harmonization of efforts.

Africa has shown leadership in the recognition of the need for and political commitment to the shift to SCP patterns. The endorsement of a coordinated framework for SCP action across the continent by the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in 2006 demonstrated the demand for the implementation of SCP.

Following Rio+20, at the 14th Session of AMCEN, African environment ministers adopted decisions to implement key African Regional Flagship Programmes, including SCP and green economy.

Strategies and Roadmaps

In 2014 stakeholders in Africa came up with detailed roadmap as a concrete vision for implementing SCP activities on the ground.

Regional Cooperation Platforms on SCP

An important actor in the creation of that roadmap was the Secretariat of the African Roundtable on SCP (ARSCP), a regional non-governmental and not-for-profit organization established in 2004, aimed at facilitating the development of national and regional capacities for SCP and promoting implementation in African countries.

The ARSCP is the largest public SCP platform in Africa, with 23 institutional members and 143 individuals as regular/registered members in 46 of the 54 African countries. The ARSCP has many partners, including the EU and UN agencies such as UNICEF, UNDP, ILO, and others.
